"These features cannot be organized into a system; many of them contradict each other, and are also typical of other kinds of despotism or fanaticism. But it is enough that one of them be present to allow fascism to coagulate around it."

"Contemporary records, in contrast to the romanticised recollections of those on the anti-fascist side, tell a different story. […] The demonstrators at Cable Street, and their successors in the anti-fascist movement, have understandably taken pride in their achievements that day. Yet far from signalling the beginning of the end for fascism in Britain, or even in the East End, the demonstration yielded a significant short-term boost for the BUF, and did nothing to hinder it in the longer term. True, it succeeded in demonstrating the strength of hostility to Mosley, confirming that his political ambitions would never be realised. But this had long been clear. By 1936 the BUF was a local irritant but a national irrelevance and destined to remain that way. Instead, Cable Street drew unnecessary attention and new adherents to the party. However laudable the motivation of the Jewish participants that day, the primary consequence of their actions was to make life significantly worse for their fellow Jews in the East End, with their involvement used to justify the commencement of the most intensive phase of anti-semitic activity in modern British history" - Daniel Tilles, History Today (2011)
"In this way Cable Street went down in history as a decisive check to fascism. In reality it was nothing of the sort. Almost all the fighting took place between the police and anti-fascist demonstrators. More importantly, Cable Street did nothing to dampen anti-Semitic agitation in the East End." - Martin Pugh, Fascists and Fascism in Britain Between the Wars (2006)
"There's a couple of great books (Weimar Radicals by Timothy Brown is one) which show that even the mongoloids in the KPD were more sensible than modern communists. There were two periods - the early '20s & late '30s - where they openly advocated a 'National Bolshevik' line to compete with the NSDAP, adopting nationalist rhetoric, direct appeals to military veterans and the middle-classes, and anti-Semitic propaganda. Can you imagine the modern Left being that flexible or pragmatic? They're so absolutely committed to their demented view of reality that they'll keep clinging onto it even as it pushes them further and further into irrelevancy. Total blockheads."
